Welcome to Year 6!


Life in year 6 is fast-paced, fun and full of memory-making moments that children will cherish forever. I am so excited for the academic year ahead and for all the wonderful lessons we will learn together. There is so much to look forward to this term, not to mention our fantastic residential visit to Standon Bowers - my favourite week of the school year!

What are we learning this term?





In reading, we use the VIPERS acronym to help us explore the content domains of the Year 6 reading curriculum. In the first half term, we will be focusing on developing our vocabulary and retrieval reading skills. 


Spelling rules to learn: 

  • Homophones and other words that are confused
  • Words ending with the suffixes ible, ibly, able, ably
  • Words following the ie/ei rule


Tricky words to spell:

lightning, marvellous, mischievous, muscle, necessary, neighbour, nuisance, occupy, occur, opportunity, parliament, persuade, physical, prejudice, privilege, profession, programme, pronunciation, queue




In the Autumn term, our Maths topics will be: number and place value; the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. 


In number and place value block, we will learn to:

  • understand place value of numbers to 10,000,000
  • navigate number lines to 10,000,000
  • compare and order numbers to 10,000,000
  • round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000
  • work with negative numbers


In the four operations block, we will learn to:

  • use written methods of addition and subtraction to solve problems
  • multiply 4 digit numbers by 1 and 2 digit numbers
  • divide 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers
  • calculate using the order of operations
  • solve problems with the four operations
  • identify and recognise common factors and multiples
  • recognise prime numbers up to 100
  • calculate square and cube numbers


In the fractions block, we will learn to:

  • simplify fractions
  • place fractions on a number line
  • add and subtract fractions
  • problem solve with fractions
  • multiply a fraction by an integer
  • multiply fractions by fractions
  • divide fractions by integers
  • use the four operations with fractions


Wider Curriculum

We have so many wonderful things to learn in the autumn term. Here is an overview of our topics and big questions...



Our big question in computing this term is: Can you create a game for Scratch? where we will become programming pioneers!



Creation and Science: Conflicting or Complementary? Where children will explore different beliefs about the beginning of the world including the Christian account and that of evolution and cosmology. 



In history, children will explore Viking beliefs about the afterlife to explore the question: Were the Vikings always vicious and victorious?



Art will be taught by the talented Mrs Lynn and the children will explore the work of the artist Gustav Klimt, which will inspire their own compositions. 



PE will take place on Mondays and Fridays and we will be considering the question: How might agility and speed be used to create space? through the sport of hockey. Please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school on these days.

Please ensure your child is accessing Times Table Rockstars (4 x 10 minutes), Spelling Shed (4 x 10 minutes) and reading their reading book (4 x 10 minutes) each week.

These sessions should be recorded on the Year 6 WEDUC form.
