Learning for life with Jesus

Our English curriculum comprises of two main components, the teaching of reading and writing. At St Thomas’, we use Letters and Sounds for the teaching of synthetic phonics and supported reading sessions from Year 1 to developing comprehension skills using the VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising or Sequencing) reading approach.

To further develop reading, we use the text-based studies to support effective teaching of English throughout the school. Each class focuses on a challenging age-appropriate text each term where they are taught in depth to write 4 or 5 quality pieces of writing in different genres.
